Twenty Grains of Rice

COVE/COVOX - Kate Kamo McHugh

Twenty Grains of Rice: Seeds of Reclamation is an exploration of my Japanese Canadian identity - cultural loss, retention and creation. This work-in-progress piece will incorporate a variety of artistic elements such as dance, improvised music, digital art, and video projection. The central questions I have been exploring are: Throughout my family’s five generations in Canada, what has been culturally lost through assimilation and what remains? How can I access the cultural remains of generations past and pass it onto my child, the fifth generation?
