Fostering the development and production of new work in interdisciplinary art.
Inter Arts Matrix is an interdisciplinary arts organization that fosters the development and production of new work in interdisciplinary art. We provide artists with creation space, grant writing workshops and clinics, and one-on-one mentorships. We recognize the challenges involved in being an artist outside of a non-metropolitan city and seek to foster community and provide meaningful opportunities for both emerging and established artists in Waterloo Region.
Founded in 2007 by director and performance creator, Anne Marie Donovan, and developed further by the second Artistic Director, Isabella Stefanescu (2014-2020), Inter Arts Matrix has developed and produced operas, plays, new music performances and interdisciplinary performances. Under the current artistic direction of Sheila McMath, Inter Arts Matrix will continue to support the creation and production of new works and to build artistic practice in Waterloo Region.
MANDATE
To educate and increase the public's understanding and appreciation of interdisciplinary art forms, to assist artists in developing interdisciplinary art and disseminating it to the public, and to provide programs promoting interdisciplinary art.
RECENT PROJECTS
Recent projects include a mentorship project called COVE/COVOX (2022), which was supported by significant grants from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Canada Council for the Arts. This project oversaw the mentorship of six aspiring artistic directors from Waterloo Region and allowed them to bring their chosen original performances to life. In the summer of 2023, we hosted an outdoor residency for ten artists in Sandhills Park, called A Hole in the Ground. Each artist was asked to respond artistically to a six-by-four foot hole that we dug in the park.
This spring, Inter Arts Matrix hosted a two-day festival, Strange Channels (2024), which offered emerging media artists an opportunity to present and discuss work-in-progress and engage in conversations about being a creative in Waterloo Region. This work was supported by the Ontario Arts Council.
In the spring of 2025, Inter Arts Matrix will be leading an innovating pilot project that explores ways of regionalizing social media output across selected arts organizations within Waterloo Region. The project is focused on creating a geographically-specific and collaborative social media strategy in Waterloo Region. Participating organizations include CAFK+A, Green Light Arts, MT Space, Neruda Arts, NUMUS Concerts, and Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound. The project is funded by a Digital Greenhouse Grant from Canada Council for the Arts.
