How to write an artist statement?

Many artists find that the best way to articulate themselves is through their work – but what happens when you go to apply for a grant, a residency, or a new opportunity and you’re asked to articulate what you’re doing in two paragraphs or less?

Writing an artist statement can be intimidating and overwhelming. It can also be a helpful opportunity for you to reflect on your art practice. What are you doing as a maker? What processes and rituals are you implementing to make progress? Where does your work fit in a historical and cultural context? Who is your audience? What is your why?

Sheila McMath will facilitate both individual and group written exercises to help you develop a compelling artist statement. Come ready with images or a small sample of your work, a notebook and pen, and an eagerness to engage deeper with your own and others’ practices.

This session is a part of a series of artist professional development evenings hosted by Inter Arts Matrix throughout 2025. Registration is not required. The event will take place at the Inter Arts Matrix studio space (Globe Studios, Studio 38 | 141 Whitney Place, Kitchener, ON N2G 2X8).
