Sewing Party!

This summer we have been at several community events during which we have been running an activity dying squares of fabric with plant dyes.

Each participant was cut a piece of fabric the size of their hand to dye however they liked, and left with us to later be incorporated into a larger work. Now approaching 400 of these squares, we are having a sewing party to stitch them together into the final tapestry!

During this event we will be sewing by hand.

The squares will first be sewn into pairs, then fours, then eights, and so on until we have one tapestry. 

Sewing Party! is a “social media experiment” inspired by the history of quilting circles, where the “media” is cotton fabric, and the “social” is being together. The act of sewing the pieces together is a form of performance, creating an analog for how relationships are built up gradually from individual bonds, to groups of people, eventually into large complex interconnected communities. We will provide needles, thread, soft lighting, quiet music, cozy snacks, and cold drinks.

This is a drop-in style event. Come for the whole time or just a bit.
